Hope, Wisdom and Courage
In a new book of essays edited by the unstoppable Professor Susan Groundwater-Smith AM, my colleague Associate Professor Jorge Knijnik and I have a contribution titled: “Hope and Courage: A collective pedagogy to build sustainable gender and equality and more”.
In this essay we concern ourselves with learning regarding gender equality through different organisational structures and practices. We use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No 5 to explore gender equality. We use two cases: one, the participation of young people in the 2014 World Cup from a small Indigenous community, Borroloola in the Northern Territory, Australia who were on a football tour to Brazil and then two, a global football event featuring women only ie the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
We argue that each has left a legacy that contributes to a Frierian dialogue that can influence a genuine social transformation. This aspiration has not yet been fully realised in terms of gender equality but one where genuine progress has been made through the agency of social learning.
